Gill Barton was a bingo caller for years, and being a mother to five children, this job really did hold a lot of appeal for her as she could work shifts around her family’s needs and be there when her children needed her.
During her time working in the bingo industry, Gill was promoted to the staff training side of things and she loved this side of the job so much and after working for 24 years in the bingo industry and reaching 50 years old, she decided it was time to take a gamble of her own and set up her own training company. Frank, Gill’s husband felt that this was just a fad and that she would soon come to her senses, but as it has turned out this was the best decision she could have ever made and she is now a multi millionairess!
This is Gill Barton’s story in her own words –
“No one who knew me beforehand can quite believe how my life has changed. My husband Frank thought I was starting the menopause and being irrational when I said I wanted to start my own business at the age of 50. Frank worked as an engraver, but he also did some bar work in the evenings as we had to try and make ends meet. We lived in a semi and we had to manage with bunk beds for the boys as we didn't have enough bedrooms."
"We had a touring caravan and we would take holidays down in Devon and Cornwall with the boys. We couldn't have afforded to take them abroad. I decided that I really loved training the staff,' she said. 'I'd have liked to have branched out on my own, but I didn't want to leave the security of a paid job. We had the boys to look after, so I needed every penny I had. It was a gamble and Frank just thought it was a fad, and that I would soon come to my senses, but I really wanted to go ahead with it”……and she did!
Mrs Barnes Company is called “GB Training Consultancy” and she now employs more than 60 people, and they place over 800 temps each week in jobs. Her company now has a turnover of £12 million a year. Mrs Barton also owns a seven bedroom mansion and a holiday home near the sea, a great result for a lady that started off as a bingo caller and worked in the bingo industry for years, don’t you think!
