The Lucky Numbers Bingo Hall in Harrogate is the last bingo hall standing in this community, but unfortunately the numbers could soon be up for all the players that frequent this establishment, as it has just come about that the owner is looking to turn the bingo hall into a block of flats.
This building first opened its doors way back in 1914 as The Palace Variety Theatre. In 1947 the theatre had a makeover and it also changed names to be called The Ritz Cinema, it was not until 1962 that the building was transformed into The Lucky Numbers bingo hall and it has remained like this ever since until now.
It has been said that owner Stephen Bartle has claimed that the bingo hall is no longer a viable prospect, therefore this is why he has now submitted plans to Harrogate Council to have the building demolished and turned into eight one bedroom flats.
The application from Mr Bartle of the Lucky Numbers bingo hall is expected to go before Harrogate Council within the next six weeks. It has been reported that developers have told the council that it would not be possible to convert the existing building, and despite advertising the building for nearly a year, no other buyers and come forwards to take on the project.
One of the local residents Christopher Bateson, had this to say about the intended closure of The Lucky Stars Bingo hall: “The loss of the bingo hall would be felt by the club members, the majority of who are pensioners and live locally. Surely the loss of a significant community facility which enhances cultural diversity in the town generally and the east side of the town in particular is not to be tolerated?"
If the plans are given to go ahead by Harrogate Council, not only will Harrogate lose its one remaining land based bingo hall, but it will also result in the loss of 13 jobs, four of which are on a full time basis and the other nine on a part time basis.
The knock on effect in a community when a bingo hall closes down can be very disheartening and some of the more elderly players a night out at the bingo with their friends each week can be a lifeline for them.
13 Bingo clubs have already closed their doors forever this year throughout the UK and it is with great sadness to see another land based bingo hall going down the same route.
