Muriel Walton has just turned 100 years old and along with receiving a telegram from Her Majesty the Queen, celebrating this milestone in her life and wishing her a happy 100th birthday, the feisty grandmother was quoted as saying “she would rather have had a cheque”! One of her favourite haunts is her local Gala Bingo hall and to make up for the lack of “cash” on her birthday, she continued her celebrations playing bingo, and I bet she was glad she did, as Gala Bingo presented her with a great birthday present, as they gave her 100 days of free bingo with them!
Muriel was also greeted by friends at the Gala Bingo Hall in Station Road, Harrow where she can often be found playing bingo, with a special birthday cake to help her birthday celebrations go off with a great bingo bang! Speaking to her local paper the Harold Observer, Muriel said, "It was really nice for everyone to go to so much effort, it was great. I had a party on Saturday too and it was the first time in 12 years that all my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were in the same room together. It was absolutely brilliant. I don't know what the key to making 100 is, you'll have to ask the man upstairs, but I guess being active as often as I can has helped," she said.
"I hate staying indoors. Up until I broke my leg a few years ago I would get on the bus to Brent Cross, go out for something to eat - anything to get out. In fact, just seven years ago I went to Los Angeles for a couple of weeks for my cousin's golden wedding anniversary and I don't think I sat down for two minutes, there was so much to do."She also added: "It's not like I don't drink or smoke or anything. The very first time I smoked was on my wedding day in 1936. From then on I smoked about 20 a day until I was 95."
We have heard in the past through a study that was made by scientists that the game of bingo can help keep your mind active and nimble and by the sounds of it Muriel certainly has all her faculties still at the ripe old age of 100!
