The staff and players at the Gala Bingo Club in Brade Drive, Walsgrave, Coventry, have been left reeling after a masked gang raided there bingo club at approximately 10.45pm on Sunday night. This was a horrific robbery for the security guard who was tangled up in the incident as he was shot in the leg by one of the raiders before they fled the scene empty handed. The 25 year old security guard is said to be in a stable condition in hospital and they only other sigh of relief was that no bingo players were actually in the Gala Bingo Club at the time of the raid.
The four gunman struck as the Gala Bingo was closing for the night and their attempt to steal the takings was fruitless as they fled the scene with no more in their pockets than they came in with. The Gala Bingo club and the area was still corned of on Monday as police officers searched the scene for evidence, but it was expected to re-open on the night time.
Detective Inspector Nigel Harrison, of Stoney Stanton Road police station, said: "This was an extremely serious incident. Fortunately the victim will make a full recovery."
A spokesman for Gala Bingo said: "We can confirm there was a shooting at our Coventry Walsgrave branch on Sunday evening, and we are working with the police on their investigation. Our main concern is for the security guard and our thoughts are with him. Luckily there were no customers in the club. We have very good security systems in place and everything is on CCTV, so we will do anything we can to help the police."
There is not much more information forthcoming on this incident other than that the Police believe the four masked men made of in a Vauxhall Astra and they are appealing for anyone with any information on this incident to contact the police or crimestoppers anonymously. The Gala Bingo that was held up is situated direct next busy supermarket Asda and the showcase cinema and megabowl are also close by.
