Joint organisers, Gerald Massey and David Hamilton set up a local bingo charity night in Driffield to help raise money for two organisations. The night went down storm with local people and due to its popular demand the organisers are already looking at repeating the charity bingo event in the spring of 2009.
The St Catherine’s Support Group also added to the money raised by holding a raffle and donated prizes, as did the parents of the preschool by donating lots of prize Easter Eggs to this good cause. Between the bingo fundraising night and the raffle they raised a total of £600 which was split between two charities, which were The St Catherine’s Hospice Driffield Support Group and The First Steps Pre School.
Cheques were presented by David and Geoff to both organisations: Jean Megginson, who is the chairman of the St Catherine's Hospice Driffield Support Group, and Pip Mountain of the First Steps Pre School. I am sure that money raised will be greatly welcomed by both of these worthwhile causes. Over the years the game of Bingo has been used in many charity fund raising events, Robbie Williams even attended one such bingo charity event in the USA to help raise money for charity, where it has been reported that he even ended up winning a handbag from playing bingo on the evening!
Two online bingo sites, Think Bingo and Bingo Scotland both help to raise money for charities every single week. When Think Bingo players play at their online bingo site on a Tuesday night between 6pm and 8pm, for every £1 they win on bingo they donate 1p out of it to their charity of the week. One of the charities they are currently supporting is The Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity. This great charity helps to support families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. Carers provide practical and emotional support to all family members within the family home and at its two respite homes. It aims to support more families with a terminally ill child.
Bingo Scotland also holds their charity nights on a Tuesday between 6pm and 8pm, where they too donate 1p from every £1 their players win between these two hours. Bingo Scotland are currently supporting Breast Cancer Care, who are the leading providers of breast cancer information and support across the UK.
It is great to see that the game of bingo is helping to raise money for some very worthwhile charities indeed.
