Bingo Industry Falls into the Red

The news from the bingo industry heartlands seem to have been very up and down of late. On the one hand we have heard that over 100 MP’s are now supporting the plight of bingo and on the other hand we are being told that up to 100 land based bingo clubs could close their doors for the last time if the UK Government does not act now. It is one thing for MP’s to be backing bingo, but it is quite another to actually see a change in the bingo tax law which the bingo industry seem to need so desperately.

It is thought that the change in the bingo duty tax law could cost the bingo industry as a whole around an additional £35m each year and smaller bingo clubs are now going into the red. Mecca Bingo claim themselves that six to seven of their bingo clubs have gone into red in direct relation to the change in the bingo tax law.

Picking up on this point speaking to the Daily Mirror, CEO of Mecca Bingo Ian Burke said, "Most are in Labour heartlands - and areas where other jobs are hard to come by."We supported the smoking ban, though half our customers smoke and it hit us hard. It feels as if they are kicking us while we're down."

A source from Gala Bingo has already stated that up to 50 of their land based bingo clubs could close and this really could be the tip of the iceberg for many independent bingo clubs who do not have the backing of some of the giants in the bingo industry like Gala Bingo and Mecca Bingo.

Gala Bingo are in the red to the tune of millions of pounds with a payback structure being devised, which entails millions of pounds being paid back each year for the foreseeable future. They have been on many cost cutting missions over recent months and things are certainly not looking good for their least profitable bingo clubs.

Thousands of bingo members have been joining the campaign to – Save our Bingo, as news is sinking in that bingo in the UK is in serious threat of decline. Bingo Clubs have been fighting back with various initiatives and bingo players numbers have been the best bingo clubs have seen for many years, so the UK bingo boom you could say is on the comeback......but still they fight against many advertises.
